Abuse of Rights
Abuse of rights is a form of elder abuse which is often overlooked due to ageism, discrimination, prejudice of older adults. Denying a person of their rights is not only wrong but is against the law.

What is abuse of rights?
The denial of a person’s rights as set out in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms or Provincial legislation is abuse of rights.

What are some examples of abuse of rights?
Denying a person the right to privacy in their home environment; censoring mail; withholding information to which the person is entitled; denying a person visitors or phone calls; restricting a person’s liberty; not allowing them to go out and socialize.

What are some of the signs of abuse of rights?
Silence, isolation, being unavailable, restriction of movements, denial of mail, use of threats and intimidation.
